(Each chapter has a section from the late 1920's and early 1930's when Edward was killing human criminals and working up to when he returned to Carlisle and Esme. The other part of each chapter takes place during 2005 when Edward has chosen to work as a psychologist -- Ben and Bella end up as two of his patients. At this point Edward pretends to be about 28 years old and if I remember correctly, he wears glasses to make himself look a little older.)
