Edward is the original vampire -- the first one who all other vampires came from. He is about 15,000 years old. Whever a new vampire is created with a "gift" Edward automatically develops that gift as well. Edward created The Volturi a few thousand years ago to watch over the vampires of the world because he was tired of dealing with "the every day" stuff. Marcus, Caius and Aro still have to answer to Edward.
Bella is a vampire -- she was human around the time of the Spanish Influenza. She lives as part of the Cullen family.
